To recognize the beatification of Mother Teresa last month, the diocese of Phnom Penh held a celebration at the morning mass of the Khmer parish. Several priests concelebrated a mass at which Bishop Emile Destombes presided. After mass, many parishioners posed for photos with a large photograph of Mother Teresa.
The liturgy was attended by a huge number of the faithful and so it was moved outdoors to a covered stage. The Missionaries of Charity had planned a variety of activities after the mass. One feature was an original song composed by the young man on the guitar and sung by the Missionaries of Charity and some of the guests.
Many of the local Khmer Catholics came to the mass because it replaced the regular Sunday morning liturgy, but many others who respected Mother Teresa and many friends of the Missionaries of Charity also came. The Indian community in Phnom Penh, not very large, was well represented in the ceremony honoring "one of their own."
Five or six different groups of children and young people performed traditional Khmer and village dances. Afther the entertainment, the Missionaries of Charity then offered a full meal to the poor people of the area.
